August / September 2008 Update
|
In August I worked on the studio/ shop trying to get it closed in before leaving for a shutdown job that I had said I would be available for. In the end that did not materialize and when the building was at a point where it could be left indefinitely, if necessary, I headed to Edmonton and picked up a call as an instrument mechanic under permit from the UA union hall.
The call was to work for Western System Controls Ltd. at the Petro Canada RCP project. I got to bend a bit of tubing and then was involved in QA/QC work of other people's work. We worked steady with few days off. The work itself was not too physically demanding except for the amount of climbing to the work sites
Juanita stayed in Meadow Lake for a couple of weeks and then returned with Rebekah who had gone there to celebrate Kohen's first birthday.
I booked a couple of hours off on a few mornings to allow us to go for a balloon ride, but did not take the time off since each time the balloon ride was cancelled. One week I could see the balloon from the refinery each morning from Saturday through Tuesday and then again on Thursday and Friday. Our booking was for the Wednesday. The forecast was for winds that were too strong to safely fly in and the flight was cancelled.
On September 19th the work ended for permits and we returned to Meadow Lake and did a bit of work on the building.
We returned to Edmonton for two weekends.
On September 26th we convoyed with Deborah and Ernest, trading grandchildren at Lloydminster. Rebekah and Deborah held a joint birthday party for Juanita and me and we all went out to dinner then returned to Nick and Rebekah's for a movie. On Saturday we went to the reptile show to see the snakes, frogs, and assorted other creepy-crawlies. Deborah bought a sand boa and a packman frog with her birthday money from earlier in September. Then we all went to the Edmonton Corn Maze and had a grand time wandering purposefully through the corn.
Nick returned with us to Meadow Lake and helped work on the building.
On October 2nd we returned to Edmonton for a scheduled balloon ride on the 3rd (it happened, it really happened! - pardon me for a Sally Field moment) and for a Heritage day session at the UA union hall on the 4th. Then, after church on Sunday we headed back to Meadow Lake to vote in the advance poll on Monday and start getting ready to leave on October 14th.
